MIDDLETON ON SEA ASSOCIATION WELCOMES YOU
WELCOME
The Middleton on Sea Association (MOSA) welcomes residents and visitors alike to our wonderful and very special area of West Sussex. With the sea and Greensward as our southerly boundary, attractive properties, a village pond, village amenities and of course the people, these are all the things that make the Sea Lane Estate a very special place to live or visit. Chichester, Arundel and the South Downs National park are all only a 20 minutes drive away.
Middleton-on-Sea (which includes the area locally known as the 'Sea Lane Estate') is recognised by most residents and visitors to have very special and unique qualities. Arun District Council has acknowledged this by its formal designation as an 'Area of Special Character' (now referred to as an 'Area of Character' in the Arun Local Plan 2018) and it is to this geographical area, that the Village Design Statement (2000) was developed. In the document it states:-
“The special character of the estate, largely planned by Captain Henry Rowlands Starkey Coldicott (1886-1980), derives from the informality and spaciousness of the layout, the quality of many of the buildings and the mature landscaping. The restrictive time frame of the development to a common standard has ensured the spacious and cohesive appearance, whilst the individuality of each property has created an atmosphere of diversity.”
This special area of character has been enjoyed and cared for over many years, long before the formal designation in October 1996. A brief history and how the foresight and vision of planning in the formative years contributed so much to our present environment is described in the Design Statement and in the ‘History’ section of the website.
